Health and Fitness Program

The Health and Fitness Program is offered by the Department of Health and Physical Activity at the University of Pittsburgh. Formerly known as the "Wellness" and "Community Fitness" programs, the Health and Fitness Program offers opportunities for faculty and staff at the University of Pittsburgh to participate in health and fitness classes and have access to a fitness center with qualified staff to assist with personal fitness goals. Current offerings include group exercise classes & fitness center membership at Department of Health and Physical Activity Fitness Center in Trees Hall.

Fitness Center Membership: In Fall Term 2012, the program marked the opening of a renovated 5,000 sq. ft. fitness facility in Trees Hall for use exclusively by staff & faculty Monday-Saturday during peak workout times. This is a separate facility from the current weight room housed in Trees Hall offering state-of-the-art Precor cardiovascular and strength equipment with interactive touch-screen displays, free weight and stretching areas, 2 group exercise studios and access to kettle bells and the most current exercise tools. Tour of the facility are available upon request.

The program is proud to emphasize that the fitness center is staffed by highly skilled graduate students from the Department of Health and Physical Activity under the supervision of Renee J. Rogers, Ph.D. and John M. Jakicic, Ph.D. These students were recruited based on their expertise in the areas of personal training, group fitness, and their interest in health and wellness promotion. As a member of the fitness facility, you have full access to this talented group of students and their skill sets. They are eager to assist with equipment orientations, exercise program designs and training plans, and have the knowledge-base to challenge the already experienced exerciser and prepare and assist the beginner as well.

Group Exercise Classes: The program offers group classes taught by HPA graduate students and certified instructors. The classes range in skill from aerobics to boot camp style fitness classes and include yoga, Pilates, Zumba, and more. The new facility in Trees Hall now houses its own indoor cycling studio with 20 Keiser bikes. Limited availability to participate in cycling classes as a staff or faculty member at the University makes this class a popular choice. Program offerings are continually updated to make the most current workouts available to the University staff and faculty.

Our mission is to help "PITT Be Fit!" Class schedules, hours of operation, and registration forms are available on our website.

Wellness for Life

The focus of the University's Wellness for Life program is to encourage proactive healthcare management for its faculty and staff members as well as their family members. Proactive healthcare management not only helps individuals to manage or avoid health risks which can improve their well-being, but it also helps to reduce the health care costs that we all pay for collectively.

In addition to the ongoing positive initiatives that the University has offered to encourage a healthy lifestyle, such as covering in-network preventive care visits at 100%, the University, in conjunction with UPMC Health Plan, will continue to offer new initiatives, incentives and programs that will support proactive healthcare management.

For members who are "well," the focus will be on staying well. For any members “at risk,” there will be opportunities and information provided to help lower that risk. Members with chronic healthcare conditions will be encouraged to participate proactively in care & condition management programs.

It is with these proactive programs and initiatives that the University will continue to work with faculty and staff members, as well as their families, to encourage “Wellness for Life.”
